Working with unaccompanied refugee children

Overview 

Are you playing a role in safeguarding and promoting the well-being of trafficked and unaccompanied children in Scotland? This course will enable you to understand the complex terminology and processes around age, asylum and trafficking. You will identify how you can provide support at different stages of an unaccompanied child’s journey using a trauma-informed approach.

By the end of the course you will be able to: 

• Recognise the legal difference between children seeking asylum, refugees and migrants
• Understand the journeys children have made to be in the UK including being trafficked
• Familiarise yourself with the UK Asylum Process and how it can impact on unaccompanied children
• Have a basic awareness of the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) for trafficking
• Understand the basic principles of the Age Assessment process
• Understand the National Transfer Scheme (NTS)
• Identify the rights and entitlements of unaccompanied children
• Be familiar with the statutory responsibilities of Guardianship Scotland
• Identify how to support at different stages of an unaccompanied child’s journey using a trauma-informed approach

Who is this course for? 

This is a course for practitioners from the statutory and third sector in Scotland who directly engage with unaccompanied children. It is also suitable for those in policy, strategic or decision-making positions which affect unaccompanied children.
