Supporting Refugee Family Integration

Based-upon the new Family Integration Practice Guide, produced by Scottish Refugee Council in collaboration with five Local Authorities around Scotland, this course explores evidence-based good practice in refugee family integration support.  Emphasis is placed upon the Personal Integration Planning process, which will enable practitioners to support refugee families through their integration journey.  Our focus is upon supporting refugee families however, the principles also apply to providing support to individuals.

Course content

The course will familiarise you with the five-step, rights-based approach to integration outlined in the Practice Guide.  It will also provide the opportunity to build on your own professional expertise through sharing good practice with the group and learning from each other.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Understand the underpinning principles of a refugee-led integration framework
  • Recognise where your role fits within the wider integration process
  • Understand how dependency is created and how to build on people’s resilience
  • Feel confident to facilitate refugee-led integration effectively
  • Have had the opportunity to trouble-shoot any integration-related issues

Who is this course for?

This training is suitable for a wide range of practitioners and managers from the statutory and third sector who are involved in providing integration support to refugees or asylum seekers.  The course caters both for professionals providing holistic integration support and for those providing support in a specific area such as housing, health, welfare, social care, education, employability or social integration.

This course is aimed at practitioners who already have some experience of working with refugees.  It assumes a basic understanding of the UK asylum and refugee context and pathways of Resettlement in Scotland.  We recommend that practitioners who are completely new to this area of work, attend our New Scots: Refugees, Asylum and Resettlement training course first, before proceeding to the Supporting Refugee Family Integration training.
