card about our policy work

About our policy & research work

We work hard to challenge injustice in the asylum system and in wider society, so that everyone in need of refugee protection can rebuild their lives here with dignity.

Fair Begins Here

Alongside Together With Refugees, we are campaigning for a fair and efficient asylum system that works for everyone.

Move-on period should be extended to 56 days

Extending the move-on period would give people the time they need to begin to rebuild their lives in here in safety.

card destitute

Destitution

Forced destitution puts people’s lives at risk and is an affront to human dignity. We are pushing for radical change to this Home Office policy.

Lift

Right to work

People seeking refugee protection have skills, talents & professional expertise. But the UK government bans people from working while waiting for asylum decisions.

"Saying goodbye was terrible, but I had no choice."

Eighteen-year-old Syrian refugee Numeir Khalife (in black), is reunited with his parents and three siblings at Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel airport. ; Terrified that he would be recruited into the army, Numeir fled his home in Syria when he was just 15. As he bid farewell to his family, his four-year-old sister Anmar cried and begged him not to go. Numeir travelled through Turkey, Greece and the Balkans, before finally reaching an uncle in Germany. By the time he arrived in 2015, he was 16 and a million miles from his family. Because he was a minor, Numeir was taken into custody by the authorities and eventually ended up in a hostel in the small northern town of Lensahn, which sits beside the Baltic Sea and has less than 5,000 inhabitants. For three years he had just one wish, to share the beauty of his new home with his family. UNHCR helped Numeir with the process of family reunification, while his father Ismain, mother Fada and three siblings fled to Turkey, then Greece, before finally hearing that their application had been approved. Eventually, in May 2018, they were reunited.

Family reunion

Unfair Home Office rules are tearing mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters apart. We need to change this. No family should be forced to live apart.

trafficking

Trafficking

Human Trafficking is a serious form of abuse perpetrated against an individual, in which an individual has been exploited, or there is an intention to exploit them

card asylum housing

Asylum accommodation

We all need a home. Safe and appropriate accommodation is a priority for people in the asylum system and a priority for our work.
