Houses Of Parliament
The houses of the UK Parliament, in Westminster

As the UK political party annual conferences heat up over the next few weeks, here at the Scottish Refugee Council we are ready to bring our message to the debate.

The conferences give the parties a chance to focus on the coming year and they give us the opportunity to represent the interests of asylum-seekers and refugees in the UK.

We join the Lib Dems conference in Birmingham

Gary Christie, our Head of Policy and Communication, is in Birmingham this week for the Liberal Democrat Party conference. He will join MP Julian Huppert and others for a seminar hosted by the Refugee Council, UNHCR and the Still Human Still Here campaign about how we should be giving the best protection we can to refugees.

The Still Human Still Here campaign is a coalition of over 40 organisations across the UK, including ourselves, who are lobbying for change in the current asylum system in order to improve the lives of those who are refused immigration status.

Labour and Conservatives later in the autumn

Next week we will be in Liverpool, this time for the Labour Party conference. Again, we will be attending events regarding asylum-seeker and refugee issues.

On October 2nd we are off to Manchester with the Conservative Party for the third and final party conference. CEO John Wilkes will join a meeting on the Refugee Convention at 60 years, where Immigration Minister Damian Green will also be speaking.

Politicians must work together to create a fair asylum system

Gary Christie said:  “It’s really important for us to be at the party conferences to urge all of the UK’s main parties to remember how important it is to protect refugees. We all need to work together to develop a fair and trustworthy asylum system that ensures those fleeing unimaginable horrors in their own countries can have the protection the need here in the UK.”
