Rahmat arrived in Scotland in 2016 with his wife and children. Shortly after receiving refugee status, he was offered a permanent job as an Economist in Glasgow, having previously worked in governmental and international development jobs in Afghanistan. They are now settled in Glasgow and he is hopeful for the future.

“I came to Glasgow-Scotland in November 2016 with my wife and my children with a hope to start a new life. When I arrived to Scotland I didn’t have permission to work. I was enthusiastic and wanted to positively contribute to my new community. Therefore, I began to volunteer on a project in the East End of Glasgow.

“In mid-2017 I got refugee status and I was granted permission to work. I decided to stay in Glasgow and started applying for jobs.

“We are now properly settled in Glasgow. I have a permanent job as an Economist. My wife is studying business and accounting, and my son is going to school and my daughter to nursery and we have a happy life.

“Scottish Refugee Council helped us tremendously.

“My hope for the future is to contribute further to this great city – Glasgow as well as the British and international community. I see great opportunities and potential and am confident to accomplish this.”
