What’s the difference between a Volunteer and an Ambassador? Which role is right for me?

With Refugee Festival Scotland coming up fast, we have opened a number of opportunities in the past couple of days. This has understandably caused some confusion. So, here’s a handy document explaining all of our different opportunities in one place – Volunteer, Photography Volunteer and Ambassador.

1. Refugee Festival Scotland Volunteer

Our Festival Volunteers will assist us by representing Scottish Refugee Council at events; carrying out evaluation and interviews; providing feedback to the Festival Team; and helping us document the festival through photography, social media and blogging.

What will I be doing?

Duties will involve:

  • Attending Refugee Festival Scotland events on behalf of Scottish Refugee Council
  • Giving information to members of the public about Refugee Festival Scotland and Scottish Refugee Council
  • Ensuring people complete the evaluation questionnaires
  • Conducting interviews with attendees at Refugee Festival events
  • Compiling information gathered in the evaluation forms and interviews
  • Various administrative tasks associated with evaluation

What skills or qualities do I need?

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • An interest in arts and community events
  • Ability to work with a range of different people including asylum seekers and refugees.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Reliability, punctuality and enthusiasm
  • Be passionate about upholding refugees’ human rights
  • Warm and approachable manner

2. Refugee Festival Scotland Photography Volunteer

It is essential that the events within the festival are documented through photography. You would be required to volunteer as part of the Refugee Festival Scotland team.

What will I be doing?

  • Attending Refugee Festival Scotland 2019 events on behalf of Scottish Refugee Council
  • Documenting events through photography
  • Ensuring permission slips are distributed and signed in order that Scottish Refugee Council may use the images in publicity and documentation

What skills or qualities do I need?

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • An interest in arts events and community events
  • Ability to work with a range of different people including asylum seekers and refugees
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work in a demanding environment and adhere to deadlines
  • Reliability, punctuality and enthusiasm

3. Refugee Festival Scotland Ambassador

Refugee Festival Ambassadors will be supported to do media interviews and do their own storytelling (e.g. through blogs/ social media) about refugee experiences, in the run up to and during Refugee Festival Scotland. There is also an option to be part of our marketing campaign, and be featured in posters across the city to promote the festival. Please note that this role is specifically for people with refugee or asylum seeking backgrounds.

Is it for me?

We are looking for people who:

  • Feel comfortable with public speaking and/or speaking to the media
  • Are comfortable with your photograph being taken to promote the festival* *(optional)
  • Have claimed or are claiming asylum in the UK
  • Are passionate about promoting positive attitudes to refugees
  • Have a good level of spoken English
  • Can commit to a training day on May 1st.
