Volunteer Role Refugee Integration Volunteer
Time Commitment At least 2 half days per week (Monday to Friday)
Ideally candidate would be available for training on Tuesdays or Thursday afternoons in late November and early December

Scottish Refugee Council is committed to assist and empower refugees to rebuild their lives in Scotland and settle into the local areas and communities.

Access to information, advice and advocacy is especially important when people in need of protection are first granted refugee status or reach Scotland from abroad.  Our integration team comprises of dedicated staff and volunteers and plays a vital role at the beginning of that complex integration journey.  We offer a holistic and personalised service to refugees across Scotland while promoting their independence and informed choice.  Our goal is for people to realise their own potential and achieve positive outcomes. The service is dynamic and adapts to the changing needs of people we work with.

As a volunteer with the team you will play a key role in ensuring that people have access to accurate information and understand their options. You will help people to identify their goals and support them in achieving potential.  You will assist advisors to prevent destitution and homelessness. You will help us to ensure that people not only feel safe in their homes and local communities but are also linked with local services inc education and training providers.

What will I be doing?

Duties will be dictated by needs of people granted refugee status and in line with their interests. It is important to recognise that You will get full guidance on a range of issues people may need your assistance with and how to act to address them. Tasks will vary, but will include:

  • Providing basic advice on issues such as access to housing and welfare rights.
  • Helping people with a range of applications and referrals
  • Attending to people granted refugee status who present with emergencies
  • Administrative tasks associated with the role

  • Effective communication and listening skills
  • An ability to show empathy with the needs of people seeking protection in Scotland  Ability to record information accurately and on time
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • A commitment to reliability so that the needs of people seeking support and advice can be met at the time they most need it.
  • Punctuality and trustworthiness
  • An understanding of equal opportunities and the importance of confidentiality
