This course explores:

  • the asylum process - paperwork, terminology, and recent changes to the system;

  • the UK Border Agency (UKBA) asylum support system (formerly known as NASS), providing a regional perspective;

  • support for those who are not supported under the UKBA asylum support system such as separated children;

  • barriers that limit access to support for people at all stages of the asylum process;

  • how to assist people refused asylum to access Section 4 support; and

  • how to support refugees in accessing mainstream benefits/housing.

This course briefly touches upon entitlements for refugees and unaccompanied or separated asylum-seeking children. However, both these areas are further examined in our separate specialised courses.

Why should I attend?

If your work involves supporting those going through the asylum process, this course will provide a detailed understanding of the often confusing system of accommodation and financial support. It is particularly relevant to people working in social work, housing, student support, health, community development, advocacy services including immigration/asylum advice and the voluntary sector.
