You will gain a broad understanding of best practice when working with interpreters, learn about service providers’ responsibilities, and how to develop or improve existing practice. Participants will also learn how to communicate effectively with their service-users when using interpreters.
This course explores:
- definitions, rights and legal obligations;
- good practice in working with interpreters at different stages of the interpreting session - before, during and after;
- how to ensure your services are accessible, regardless of a person’s language needs (anti-discriminatory practice);
- the challenges of working with interpreters for service-users and service-providers;
- the range of skills required in working with non-English speaking clients;
- other forms of interpreting such as telephone, group and sign language; and
- the importance of using trained interpreters and how to access them.
Who should attend?
This course is for you if you work with non-English speaking service users, including those seeking asylum and refugees, and need a comprehensive understanding of how to work with interpreters. It is particularly relevant for those working across a number of public services including social work, housing, education, citizens' advice, employment, health, community development or the justice system.
