Media release, July 14: Skills being wasted by not allowing asylum seekers to work

New research today reveals the range of skills the UK is losing by denying the vast majority of asylum seekers entitlement to work.

The study was carried out by Scottish Refugee Council's partner organisation Refugee Council, along with the Zimbabwe Association.

Donna Covey, Chief Executive of the Refugee Council said:

"This study shows that denying those who want to work the opportunity to do so is an appalling waste of skills, and indeed of money."

Media release, June 19: Global recipes at heart of the home in new cook book

A brand new, lavishly illustrated cookbook launches as part of Refugee Week Scotland 2009.

‘Heart of the Home: The Kitchen Cookbook’ asked Glaswegians from different cultures to talk through a favourite recipe, from Iraqi dumplings to Scottish Cranachan.

Media release, June 12: Biggest ever Refugee Week Scotland kicks off

Refugee Week Scotland 2009 begins with a Family Fun Day featuring African cooking, Turkish music and a host of activities at Glasgow’s Tramway and Hidden Gardens this Saturday.

The aim is to celebrate the contribution that refugees have made to Scotland through arts, music and discussion. This year the theme is ‘HOME’.

Simon Macallum's 'Home Sweet Home'is the Tron Theatre's flagship Refugee Week play opening this week as part of Refugee Week Scotland 2009.

Staged by the acclaimed Birds of Paradise Theatre Company, the play examines the dynamics that form between a volunteer Scottish host and the destitute asylum seeker that she has opened up her home to.

Media release, June 11: Story of Kurdish exile premieres at Refugee Week Film Festival

The moving new documentary Kurdi premiers next week as part of the Refugee Week Scotland Film Festival at Glasgow Film Theatre on 16 June.

Doug Aubrey said: "In an attempt to simply fit in and assimilate in the western world and in the UK particularly after 7/7 - a lot of asylum seekers and refugees won't talk. Kurdi is a film about one of these people in search of a past, a present and, even though we didn't know it at the time, a future."

Multiple Perrier-nominee Reginald D Hunter will headline the Red Cross Refugee Week Comedy Night on Friday 19 June at the Tron Theatre, Glasgow.

Hunter will bring his own line of firebrand comedy to Glasgow to mark the week-long celebration of the contribution refugees make to life in Scotland.
