Women can face unique barriers when they seek safety here in the UK

In November 2011 we staged our annual conference, focusing on how to improve the asylum system to make sure women got better treatment.

Called ‘Raising Refugee Women’s Voices’, the sell-out conference, at Hampden Stadium, saw speakers from the UK Border Agency, the Scottish Government, UNHCR and the Refugee Women’s Strategy Group gather to discuss the issues that are affecting women both within the asylum process and once they have refugee status.

Marking 60 years of the UN Refugee Convention

The conference took place against the backdrop of the 60th Anniversary of the Refugee Convention, which has been marked throughout 2011, as well the UK’s 7th periodic report to the UN Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) Committee.

Frances Nicholson, from the UNHCR, also talked about the work they have been doing around the world with refugee women – whose experiences are very similar to refugee women here in Scotland.

Recommendations for making our asylum system better for women refugees

This report provides a summary of the key issues and recommendations for action discussed during the conference based on notes taken by Scottish Refugee Council staff and volunteers.

Various delegates were asked during the conference to reflect on the issues asylum seeking and refugee women face and how the asylum system needs to be improved.
