Schools across Scotland to get in on the act this Refugee Week thanks to Glow

Schools across Scotland will be able to get in on the act for Refugee Week 2011 thanks to a brand-new partnership between Scottish Refugee Council and Glow Scotland, the online education community.

Simple Acts is the UK-wide drive to promote understanding of refugees in Britain and is promoted every Refugee Week across the country. This year, the Scottish focus for Simple Acts is in schools – after several Scottish schools successfully carried out their own Simple Acts in 2010.

Teaching materials about refugees

Glow’s Simple Acts page will allow teachers to download teaching materials on refugees and the challenges they have faced in seeking safety. Also planned are live ‘lessons’ with representatives from Scottish Refugee Council. The page will be available from April 18.

Belinda McElhinney, Refugee Week Scotland coordinator, said: ‘Simple Acts is a really good campaign for schools as it gives teachers and pupils something easy, simple and fun to do to learn about refugees and the challenges they have faced.

‘We’re really excited that Simple Acts is now available through the Glow portal – it means pupils all over Scotland can get involved in Refugee Week.’

If you’re registered on Glow you can visit the Simple Acts page

Notes to Editors:

Simple Acts is a UK-wide campaign promoted by the Refugee Week partnership, which includes Scottish Refugee Council. Its aim is to inspire individuals to use small, everyday actions to change perceptions of refugees. Find out more here:

The campaign consists of 20 actions that can be done by anyone and that encourage us to learn and do more with refugees. With every person who joins in on the idea and does a small thing with and for refugees, we get a little closer to removing barriers between communities and to creating the kind of world we all want to live in.

Refugee Week is a UK-wide programme of events which celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK. During Refugee Week hundreds of events exploring refugee experiences take place across the UK. These range from small community and school activities to art exhibitions, political debates, film screenings and musical performances.

This year Refugee Week runs from June 20-26. For more details on what’s on during Refugee Week in Scotland go to
