Outspoken comedy star Reginald D Hunter heads up
Red Cross Refugee Week Comedy Night

Multiple Perrier-nominee Reginald D Hunter will headline the Red Cross Refugee Week Comedy Night on Friday June 19th at the Tron Theatre, Glasgow.

Following on from a successful lead turn by Stephen K Amos at last year’s event, Hunter will take his own line of firebrand comedy to Glasgow to mark the week-long celebration of the contribution refugees make to life in Scotland.

Kenny Hamilton, head of British Red Cross refugee services in Scotland, said: “The annual Red Cross Refugee Week comedy night is back again with another great line-up, headed by Perrier Award nominee Reginald D Hunter. This year the Red Cross is urging people to Look Beyond the Label of ‘refugee’ and what better way to push stereotypes and boundaries than through a night of top-class comedy.

“We should be proud of the UK's role offering refuge to people in desperate need of safety and should be celebrating the skills, talents and contributions that people who seek sanctuary in the UK bring. Come to the comedy night and show your support.”

Abbie Wallace, Refugee Week Coordinator for Scotland, said: “It’s brilliant that Refugee Week continues to attract such high-profile talent. We’re looking forward to seeing Reginald D Hunter as part of Refugee Week.”

Over 100 diverse arts, cultural and sporting events will take place across Scotland to mark this year’s Refugee Week, taking place from June 15-21. Download it here: http://www.scottishrefugeecouncil.org.uk/Ref_Week_Prog

Notes to Editors

  1. Refugee Week Scotland is coordinated by Scottish Refugee Council, www.scottishrefugeecouncil.org.uk and is a partner event with Homecoming Scotland.

  1. Refugee Week is a UK-wide programme of arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and encourages a better understanding between communities.

  1. The purpose of Refugee Week is to deliver positive educational messages that counter fear, ignorance and negative stereotypes of refugees, through arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and promote understanding about the reasons why people seek sanctuary.

Refugee Week was first held in 1998, and was created in response to the increasingly negative perceptions of refugees and asylum seekers held by the general public in Britain. It remains the only UK-wide event that promotes the importance of sanctuary and the benefits it can bring to both refugees and host communities.
