Government commits to ending child detention

Scottish Refugee Council response to news that the Government has made a commitment to end the detention of children for immigration purposes:

John Wilkes, Chief Executive of Scottish Refugee Council, said: “This is very welcome news, not only for asylum seeking families and their children but for the whole of our society.

“For many years we have been calling for the end of the inhumane practice of detaining children for immigration purposes at Dungavel and other immigration detention centres across the UK.

“We are delighted that the new Conservative Lib Dem Coalition Government agree that it isunacceptable. We hope that it will continue to work for a fairer and most just asylum system for all.”
