Scottish Refugee Council Employability programme

Finding a job is a real challenge for refugees but a huge part of the integration process. We believe that refugees deserve an opportunity to work to their full potential and support themselves. Over 90% of refugees granted leave to remain and the right to work are still unemployed at the end of the first year. This project addresses the difficulties that refugees face in finding employment despite having skills and enthusiasm to offer.

We provide short courses to ‘job-ready’ applicants to cover:

  • An understanding of the UK job market
  • Where to look for work
  • Identifying transferable skills
  • Creating CV's
  • Application forms and the application process
  • Interview skills and mock interviews

Are you an Employer?

We began our project this year working in partnership with a major coffee chain to guide 60 trainees through the process of applying for work. The project has already been successful in placing several candidates in employment however, with a very diverse pool of potential employees, we are keen to hear from any employer who would like to engage with the project as part of their recruitment programme, particularly in Glasgow and Edinburgh.






We have a framework to guide and support partner employers in recruiting candidates from a refugee background, allowing you to find the staff you need and helping refugee candidates to effectively show the skills they have to offer.
