Housing & Welfare

Are you supported by NASS?
If you were sent to Glasgow from England by the UK government you will receive your support from a government organisation called the National Asylum Support Service (NASS).

If you have any problems with your home, for example bad neighbours, damp, broken electrical goods you must call your Project Worker on the telephone number you were given when you moved into your house.

If you still have a problem you can call the Glasgow Asylum Seeker Support Project on 0141 222 7300. If the problem persists please contact the Scottish Refugee Council on our free telephone number 0800 085 6087.

If you are an asylum seeker not supported by NASS?
If you have just applied for asylum and are not yet supported by NASS the Scottish Refugee Council will arrange for you to be temporarily housed at the YMCA in Glasgow.

This will consist of a series of briefings and a DVD presentation to provide some basic orientation details and an understanding of the asylum process, support process, rights and responsibilities and dispersal arrangements. Help and advice will be given in accessing NASS support, legal representation, and health services.

In Scotland, the Induction Process is known as the Scottish Induction Service and is provided by the Scottish Refugee Council. People requiring accommodation will be housed at the YMCA in Petershill Rd. until being dispersed to NASS accommodation which may or may not be in Glasgow.

Access to the service is through the Scottish Refugee Council.

For People who have received a Positive Decision
If you are granted leave to remain you have 28 days to leave your National Asylum Support Service (NASS) accommodation. This can be a complicated process so it is important that you receive immediate advice from the Scottish Refugee Council.

Scottish Refugee Council can give you advice on all housing matters such as applying to a housing association or council, renting from a private landlord, furnishing your new house or moving to another area. We can also advise you how to access welfare benefits.

To arrange an appointment at our Glasgow or Edinburgh office please call our free telephone number 0800 085 6087.

Are you an asylum seeker at the end of your case?
Scottish Refugee Council and Legal Services Agency have produced a leaflet to explain your options if your asylum claim has been fully refused. Click here to read the leaflet. (PDF)
