Further Education

Learn about colleges and university courses available throughout Scotland. Aslyum seekers can access part-time college courses, up to HND level, for free.

ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages)
Provides a directory of organisations, colleges and voluntary agencies offering English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes. The directory includes over 60 providers of English language classes in the Greater Glasgow area.

Helping you meet the cost of learning (November 2009)

This guide identifies funding arrangements available for asylum seekers, refugees, migrant workers/frontier workers and EU nationals (including UK nationals who have never had ordinary residence in Scotland but have exercised the right to residence in the EEA/Switzerland) and former Gurkhas and their family members wishing to undertake Further or Higher Eduction in Scotland.

Further information on anything contained within this leaflet can be obtained from Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS).  Their details are contained in the leaflet.

Important: When applying for a college course, you should ensure that you provide documents to show evidence of your status to be eligible to have your fees waived. You should only have to show evidence of your status when you are applying for your course.

Student Awards Agency for Scotland
The agency responsible for financial support for Scottish students. Their website offers advice on eligibility, contact details and application forms.

 

Children

School education is free in the UK and by law children between the age of 5 and 16 must attend school. All children of asylum seekers and refugees are entitled to free education and are treated in the same way as any other children.
